The sisters have engaged the local community in assessing the causes of Gender Based Violence (GBV) through home visits, counseling and sharing of experience. During the COVID-19 lock down there was an overwhelming response and in the process of interaction, the sisters discovered many cases of abuse and they are progressively forging a way forward.

The sisters have gone ahead to meet District Authorities and shared achievable goals with the District Probation Office, Justice and Peace Office – Lira Diocese. This collaborative networking has further motivated the team to work harder. The activities have become mandatory.

Some of the youth from Lira participated in the zoom meeting and seminar organized by AFJN Uganda. After that the youth had two onsite meetings to discuss the way forward on how to move from the zoom workshop to the local community to express concerns on how to address the issues of Gender Based Violence GBV and Human Trafficking. They had several meetings and seminars facilitated by the sisters and other stakeholders.

In order to expand the platform for advocacy, AFJN Uganda made a Memorandum of Understanding with Radio Wa for three months and the sisters together with some of the youth were able to use the radio as medium of communication to reach out to the entire Lango sub-region. The sisters got another overwhelming response from parents and other stakeholders.

A Sister   in a counselling session with a Youth

The Sisters went on air to address issues of GBV, Child Protection and Trafficking in Persons. They also carry out counselling and guidance at Bishop Asili Counseling, rehabilitation and Training Centre. The sisters have conducted a few seminars for the school going and non- school going youth.

The sisters are enthusiastically working for global justice, seeking to protect the dignity of the destitute and the oppressed. And join hands with them in their struggle for basic human rights to promote campaigns against GBV. From the experiences sisters gathered, their next move is to empower the youth who are the most vulnerable and have experienced GBV to speak for themselves and the silenced. This would best be done on Radio. Other issues can also be addressed through group media – music drama and dance, storytelling, and debates. The main challenge of Lira team is engaging the youth in programs because they always demand facilitation. However, the sisters are determined to bring the youth on board to be coached on how to present when on-air and to ease their movement during the talk shows.
